1870s-1890s “Na Lani ʻEhā” (The Heavenly Four) are musically active: siblings Prince Leleiohoku, Princess Likelike, King Kalakaua and Queen Liliuokalani. They compose their own music and create string backed singing groups to perform in competition with each other.
Prince Leleiohoku founds the Kawaihau Glee Club. Similar groups will be popular in Hawaiʻi for decades.
Thomas Sylvester Kalama tours with the Chinese Circus Orchestra to San Francisco, New York, and Europe.
1872 Henry Berger arrives from Germany to lead the Royal Hawaiian Band. He will teach many successful musicians, transcribe Hawaiian mele and write many other songs. Begins teaching at Keoneula Boys Reform school teaching theory, composition and harmony, recruiting and training future RHB members.
1874 Joseph Kekuku, inventor of the Hawaiian steel guitar style is born in Lāie.
1877 Thomas Edison invents the phonograph, enabling sound to be recorded and played back.
